Basketball

  • Oak Knoll 3rd-5th Grade Basketball
Registration for 2017-18 Basketball is now closed. If we have enough coaches, there may be limited opportunity for Late Registration. If you would like to request Late Registration, please email Sherwin Chen.

    Program
If your son or daughter is a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader, he or she is eligible to play on an Oak Knoll basketball team!Basketball We participate in recreational leagues offered by the City of Menlo Park and organized by the Oak Knoll After School Sports Program. Each child will learn the basic skills of the game in a fun and encouraging environment on teams coached by parent volunteers. The season runs from November through March.

    Registration
The registration period ended on Tuesday, October 17.

    NOTE: NEW Waitlist Process
In the event we have too many players and not enough volunteer coaches, a waitlist will be created. This year, the waitlist will not be determined by registration times. Waitlisted players will be RANDOMLY SELECTED from the entire pool of players in that grade/gender (children of coaches excepted) and will remain waitlisted until we are able to find more parent volunteers. We will, of course, make every effort to find additional coaches as necessary to avoid the waitlist process.

    Cost
$125 registration fee for the season. Scholarships are available - please contact Kristen Gracia.

Skills Assessment Day - MANDATORY FOR ALL PLAYERS

In order to form balanced and competitive teams for every grade, there will be a mandatory Skills Assessment, to be held on two Minimum Days during conference week. An outside third-party organization will run players through a series of basketball drills and games in order to determine their skill level and help facilitate the creation of balanced teams. To be clear, these are NOT tryouts. Every child will be placed on a team as long as we have enough coaches. This will be for PLAYERS ONLY; parents are asked not to observe. Any coaches who would like to observe may do so. Please see below for times. CHECK IN 15 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR TIME SLOT (NEW CHECK-IN LOCATIONS BELOW).

Tuesday, October 24th -- GIRLS ASSESSMENT
    • 5th grade -- 11:45 check-in at LARGE GYM, 12:00-1:00 assessment
    • 4th grade -- 1:00 check-in at SMALL GYM, 1:15-2:15 assessment

The assessments will require physical activity. Please plan your child's meal on his or her assessment day accordingly -- we recommend a snack or light lunch only for 4th and 5th graders, in particular.

It is mandatory that all players attend the Skills Assessment, whether new or returning. If your child has an unavoidable conflict, please contact Carolyn Kryger immediately to determine whether a make-up session is possible.

    Practice Times
Practices will be held twice a week at Oak Knoll starting in early to mid-November. Practices may be scheduled on weekday afternoons or evenings (starting as late as 7pm) and/or on weekends (Saturday or Sunday) any time from 8am to 7pm. Practice times will be determined by each team's coaches when teams are formed on November 2 and will be promptly communicated to families at that time.

Please note: Accommodations cannot be made for schedule conflicts once teams are formed. It is therefore very important that, during the registration process, you list all possible schedule conflicts that may preclude your child from attending practices or games during the season. We will attempt to minimize conflicts when teams are formed. After registering, if there are any schedule changes for your child, please email them to Alison Matthews.

    Game Schedule
Weekly games are expected to begin December 7th and end in March. Games are scheduled by the league and will be played at Arrillaga Family Gymnasium (600 Alma Street, Menlo Park) on Saturdays, with the exception of 5th grade girls, who play on Mondays. Approximate time slots for games are as follows:
    • 3rd grade girls and boys: Saturday mornings
    • 4th grade girls and boys: Saturday late mornings and early afternoons
    • 5th grade boys: Saturday mid- to late afternoons
    • 5th grade girls: Monday afternoons

    Parent Coaches
The Oak Knoll School Basketball program is run entirely by parent volunteers. We need parents to volunteer to be coaches! No coaching experience is necessary. Become coach and share an unforgettable experience with your child!!! Sign up when you register your child or email Sherwin Chen to learn more.
