Hello Hawks! This is my 16th year at Hillview as a 6th grade science teacher, and my 18th year teaching. We've got a fantastic school, amazing principal, wonderful teachers and staff, and awesome students! I am part of Vesuvius Academy (Vesuvius is a volcano in Italy; think "Pompei.")

Although I've had a rich and varied professional career, my true love is teaching science to 6th graders. Prior to coming to Hillview, I was a naturalist at Outdoor Ed, a science teacher at the Randall Museum in San Francisco, an environmental trainer for an environmental consulting firm, an instructor for the Outward Bound School in Zimbabwe, Africa, I also taught math and English at Burlingame Intermediate School for two years.

In 2006 I had the wonderful privilege to leave the classroom for a few years to serve as a Science Resource Teacher for the Partnership for Student Success in Science ("PS Cubed"), which was funded by a major grant from the National Science Foundation. While there I developed and implemented professional development for 200 science teachers in nine school districts.

I am an avid Stanford fan as I received my BA in Human Biology from Stanford University, with an emphasis in environmental science. My science teaching credential, which includes a middle school emphasis, was earned at San Francisco State University. In 2010, I received my master's degree in Natural Science from San Jose State University.

I love to swim, bicycle, hike, and play guitar. I love cycling so much that I've ridden my bicycle down the Pacific Coast from Vancouver, BC to Santa Barbara, CA, as well as all around Europe, Burma (Myanmar), and India. I don't get to cycle much these days as my husband Tim and I have 6 year-old twin boys, Carson and Drew. Instead of cycling, I chase the boys around! Tim is also a teacher (computer science) at Abbott Middle School in San Mateo.

The best way to reach me is by email at jhilborn@mpcsd.org. I generally return all emails within one working day. To reach our entire academy, feel free to email vesuvius@mpcsd.org.

I am looking forward to a great year!

    Go Hawks! Go Vesuvius!
