    Class Descriptions

    Encinal Piano Group

The Encinal Piano Group is open to students in grades K-2.  Learn piano in a fun social group atmosphere! Group piano class provides students an excellent introduction to the keyboard and prepares them for more serious private study as well as playing in a band/ensemble. Most importantly, students will begin to develop the skill of playing music with their peers which provides a lifelong benefit.  Our teachers focus on developing the students’ core keyboard skills: hand position, note-reading, chord vocabulary, rhythm, and theory while rehearsing a repertoire of rock, pop, and classical songs. Click here for more class and rental information.

    Encinal Ukelele Group - new!

The uke is an excellent instrument on which to learn how to play music. It's relatively simple to learn, easy to tote around, inexpensive, super fun, and timelessly popular!  In this ensemble, we will jump right into the fun stuff and learn how to play music on the ukulele. By the end of the course, students will know a few chord positions, will be able to play a couple of songs on the ukulele, and be able to sing along. Our instructors bring a classroom set of ukuleles with them to every class for the kids to use and we highly recommend that students also have a ukulele at home to practice. Click here for more class and rental information.

Bulldog Youth Flag Football and Fitness Fun

Whether your child is an aspiring competitive athlete or just in need of some general fitness, this class with Bulldog will TEACH, COACH, and especially INSPIRE your child through funworkouts & our famous flag football scrimmages. Send your child for some safe/healthy workouts outside on the grass in the fresh air. Arrive in cleats (optional) and bring a water bottle!

Run Club Menlo Park - new!

Run Club is for 3rd-5th grade girls. The head coach is Scott Paterson who has coached the Encinal girls running team for the past 7 seasons. Practices are held at Encinal's track. No running experience required. First Rule of Run Club: Have Fun! Practices are Mondays/Fridays 3:15-4:45pm. 20 practices. For full details, please contact Scott Paterson at scott@runclubmenlopark.org or 650-444-1001.

PockeTurtle Computational Thinking and Programming - new!

Designed by Stanford Artificial Intelligence professor David Zhu, PockeTurtle is a novel Computational Thinking curriculum that is currently being implemented rapidly at 1000s of elementary schools in Korea and China. Encinal is one of the first and only schools to offer this curriculum in the US! The class, “PockeTurtle Level 1,” designed by Hatch Learning, is taught to K-2 kids by Stanford Computer Science students. The curriculum, based around a small turtle-like robot and carefully designed colorful tools and booklets, teaches children to fully visualize problems and solutions by merging their thoughts with the physical environment. They then test their reasoning by ‘teaching’, or programming, their turtle robot to solve the task at hand. “PockeTurtle Level 1” is unique in that it brings programming away from computer screens and onto student’s desks, making for a much more natural and collaborative Computer Science learning experience for K-2 kids. PockeTurtle will be taught once per week for 10 weeks. The classes are comprised of no more than 12 K-2 students and 2 teachers. Register for one or more of our limited spots on Homeroom before the class fills up!

Parents can expect improved attention to detail, time on task, improved handwriting and fine motor skills along with discipline, persistence, patience and an overall “I-can-do-it” attitude.

At Kidizens, children take on a highly experiential civic leadership journey to learn 21st century real-life skills and strategies by building, managing and governing LEGO cities. The menu is a combination of savory and sweet dishes. Other classes will also be offered during the week. The children will be cooking as Chef Meenu guides, observes and answers questions. Chef Meenu has been teaching virtually since April of last year now, and it's evident that children want to cook themselves, so they get a hands on experience. Recipes are emailed in advance, so all of the necessary ingredients and supplies can be purchased. Please email Chef Meenu if you are interested in a class or if you have any questions.
